Gaming has become an integral part of culture, and it has undergone some major reforms in the past to become what it is. From bulky arcade machines to fitting in our palms, the story of gaming is as fascinating as the game itself. The world of gaming has undergone several changes to become what it is as we know it today. However, the end is nowhere near for the gaming evolution for every advancement is just marking a new beginning.

Level One: The Dawn of Gaming

The inception of electronic gaming can be traced back to the 1950s and 1960s when the concept was not that popular and was just a means to test the limits of electronics and computers. The games were basic and not accessible to the general populous due to the novel nature of electronic technology.

Coming to the 1970s, the arcade era dawned upon mankind and brought gaming to the masses. Arcade parlors became a highly popular social phenomenon influencing the minds of young and adults alike to make gaming a popular concept around the world. The concept of high scores and bragging rights associated with it was popularized by the arcade culture.

Level Two: The Rise of Home Consoles

Going out and gaming was a social task that could be daunting and even not possible sometimes for the general population. This led to the inception of home consoles and set the foundation for a world of gaming no one imagined. Atari became the pioneer for home consoles and created a whole new era of home gaming. The variety of games offered by home gaming consoles was also booming rapidly and this led to the end of the arcade era soon.

Pac-man, Super Mario, Contra, and Donkey Kong are some classics that came out in the 1980s and became an integral part of the gaming world. These games also introduced gameplay arcs and mechanics that still govern modern-day games.

Level Three: Resurgence and The Nintendo Era

After a slew of bad gaming titles, the gaming industry came to a grinding halt back in 1983 and while this was awful it also led to something that changed the world of gaming forever. Nintendo entered the gaming market in the mid 1980s and brought the world of gaming back to life. Nintendo not only revolutionized the market with its legendary consoles but also through its games such as The Legend of Zelda. This game introduced the world to the concept of an open-world and role-playing games that are quite the norm in modern gaming as we experience it today

Level Four: Go From 2D to 3D

In the mid 1990s, the world of gaming brought forth 3D graphics to add a whole new level of immersion to the good old 2D gaming culture Sony PlayStation and Nintendo 64 were the pioneers of this era as they brought 3D gaming to the masses. New games with 3D graphics were more immersive and had better-detailed worlds that transformed the complete gaming experience.

The demand for more realistic games started with this 3D revolution and the late 1990s also introduced the world to multiplayer gaming concepts. This concept laid the groundwork for online gaming by offering a simple split-screen for two players to compete.

Level Five: Take it Online

It's the 2000s and the internet gained traction around the world; while revolutionizing the world in many ways, the internet opened the gaming world to a whole new iteration of multiplayer gaming. This era was the start of the gaming community that would become the cornerstone of gaming evolution in the years to come. Microsoft's Xbox Live service launch in 2002 was literally a game-changing moment for the online multiplayer gaming concept.

The Internet also opened the gaming industry not just for gamers but game developers as well. With people downloading games directly on their personal computers, anyone with a unique approach to gaming and knowledge of game development could make a novel game and make it available to people. The downfall of physical game distribution can be traced back to this era.

Level Six: Make it More Immersive

Come the end of 2010, the world of gaming was completely unrecognizable from what it was in the past. Better graphics, a massive gaming community, the rise of game streaming, and more were happening in the gaming space. We thought we had reached the peak level of gaming at this stage, but the introduction of virtual reality (VR) in gaming offered a new pathway for gamers and game developers to take immersion to a whole new level The Pokémon GO craze of 2016 is a testament to how augmented reality and other immersion technologies are ushering in a new era of gaming. The launch of Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PlayStation VR experiences showed the world what VR gaming was capable of.

Level Seven: Evolution Completed or Revolution Started?

The rapid hike in the popularity of mobile gaming over the past couple of decades has shown the potential of the gaming industry to surprise the world in ways we can’t imagine. Whether it gaming laptops or Web3 Blockchain technologies, the gaming industry still has a lot of untapped potential to explore. So, gamers and game developers should always be ready to take their game to the next level and never stay oblivious to the fact that the gaming world will always be expanded to the next level.
