Bagasse is burned to generate steam and power for the sugar mill. A typical raw sugarcane plant requires approximately 35 kWh and 450 kg of exhaust steam per tonne of cane. A modern raw sugar mill can currently operate with 30 kWh and 300 kg of exhaust steam per tonne of cane with continuous operation of the pans, crystallizers, and centrifuges, as well as an efficient evaporation station.
